This 5-day group safari is a focused exploration of Kenya’s most wildlife-rich and scenically diverse destinations. Designed for travelers seeking an efficient yet immersive safari experience, the itinerary combines world-class game viewing in the Maasai Mara with the rhino sanctuary landscapes of Lake Nakuru National Park and the tranquil freshwater ecosystem of Lake Naivasha.
Expect expertly guided game drives, dramatic Rift Valley backdrops, and varied wildlife habitats within a compact timeframe. Travel in a custom safari vehicle alongside a small group, ensuring strong sightlines during game drives and a social, shared adventure atmosphere. This tour is ideal for first-time safari travelers or guests working within limited travel days but unwilling to compromise on wildlife diversity.
Your trip begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Nairobi. After a brief safari briefing at our Jollic Adventure office, you'll head out of the city toward the Great Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint. The drive from Nairobi to this viewpoint takes about 2 hours on the highway, so bring your camera for some great landscape shots (as the photos at this viewpoint are quite scenic). You'll make a stop for lunch in Narok Town, which offers several good local restaurants where you can try nyama choma (grilled meat) or tilapia from Lake Naivasha. The final stretch of your journey takes you into Masai Mara Game Reserve, and you'll head straight out on an evening game drive as soon as you check in. Evening drives can be very rewarding for seeing predators like lions or leopards as they get active during this time.
You'll want to rise before dawn for morning game drives, as this is when the reserve's animals are most active (5:45am is our departure time). After a substantial breakfast back at camp, you'll spend the entire day exploring the Mara. Game drives usually wrap up between 3pm and 4pm, with lunch packed for a riverside picnic along the Mara River. You can spot hippos from the shore during this time. In the afternoon, there's an optional visit to a Masai village where you can watch traditional dancing and singing. Most visitors find it worth the additional fee, plus you can purchase authentic beadwork and carvings directly from the artisans. Masai warriors will show you around their homes and explain their culture, which makes for some great cultural insights.
After breakfast and checkout, you'll drive toward Lake Nakuru, with a stop for lunch en route. The journey covers about 140 kilometers and takes roughly 3 hours including the lunch break. You'll pass near the impressive Mount Longonot on your right, where you might want to take some photos if the weather's clear (it's approximately 2.7 kilometers from the main road). There's an optional stop at Lake Naivasha if you'd like to add a boat trip to your day. By evening, you'll reach Nakuru Town and check in at Buraha Zenoni Hotel. The hotel's main restaurant serves both Kenyan and international cuisine, though the nyama choma is particularly recommended.
Morning game viewing in Lake Nakuru National Park typically lasts about 4 hours, with your departure around 6:30am. The park is quite compact, so despite the relatively short drive time, you'll likely see rhinos, buffalos, and the flamingos that the park is famous for (though their numbers can fluctuate). After lunch served en route to Lake Naivasha, you'll check in at Leisure Apex Resort. By evening, there are two main options available: exploring the lake area on your own or visiting a nearby flower farm to learn about Kenya's renowned rose industry. The resort offers comfortable rooms, though the evening entertainment program here isn't currently running.
Today's exploration of Hell's Gate National Park runs from about 6:30am to early afternoon. You'll see Olkaria and Hobley's extinct volcanoes, the rugged Hell's Gate Gorge with its distinctive red cliffs, and volcanic features like Fisher's Tower and Central Tower. The park has some good hiking trails if you're interested, though most visitors stick to driving through. After lunch, you'll drive to Amboseli National Park, reaching your accommodation by evening with enough daylight to take some pre-dinner photographs of Mount Kilimanjaro, which often appears clear in the late afternoon.
You'll need to be up and out early (around 5:00am is best) to catch Mount Kilimanjaro before the clouds roll in. Even at this high altitude (1,340 meters), it's quite a rare sight to see the entire peak uncovered. After a lengthy morning of game viewing and wildlife photography, the park usually closes by 3pm. Some visitors choose to bring hiking gear for the self-drive walks along the lakeshore, though the afternoon heat can be quite intense around here. There's an optional visit to a Masai village in the late afternoon if you'd like to add some cultural interaction to your day, but many find they're ready for dinner and rest after the morning's activities.
The final day includes an early morning game drive around 5:15am to capture that special dawn light. You'll return to camp between 8:30am and 9:00am for breakfast, then check out. The drive from Amboseli to Nairobi takes 5-6 hours including lunch stops, and you'll reach the city by 2pm-3pm. While you might be tempted to order a second coffee at the lunch stop, keep in mind that the rest of the drive is mostly highway with limited bathroom facilities. This gives you plenty of time before dinner to check in at your hotel and freshen up before heading out to explore Nairobi (assuming you have evening plans).
